The Lake District’s
protected valleys have gale force winds on average 5 days out
of the year, while the coastal areas receive 20 days of gale force
winds annually and the fell tops receive up to 100 days of gale
force winds every year.
The commonly
low height of most of the Lake District’s fells means that,
even though there is snowfall expected during winter, they are
free from snow any time throughout the year. Normally considerable
snowfall only occurs from November through April at the peak of
winter. The average snow fall on Helvellyn is around 67 days of
the year. Right through the year the Lake District’s valleys
usually have 20 days of snowfall, 200 days of rainfall and 145
dry days.
Hill fog is
a common occurrence any time all through the year and the fells
on average barely receive approximately 2,5 hours of sunshine
a day, while this increases to around 4,1 hours of sunshine a
day on the coastal plains.
