Threlkeld
Description: This beautiful village at the foot of Blencathra
is situated a few miles east of Keswick. Threlkeld began to develop rapidly at the beginning of
the 20th century, when lead and zinc was discovered on Blencathra, granite quarrying continued in
the area right up until the 1980s. Of the village’s old pubs, the Horse and Farier and the
Salutation are the most popular, both serve the finest local beers and cuisine.
Threlkeld
has a school, a Post Office/general store, the 1777 St Mary’s Church and the mining museum
located at the site of the old quarry, which exhibits the history of mining in the area. One of
the most popular events in the region is the famous annual Threkeld sheep dog trials held in
August. Foxhound and terrier shows, as well as hound trailing are part of the
event.
Blencathra has breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape and is very
popular with fell walkers wanting to explore one of the different routes up to its summit.
