Sawrey
Description: Sawrey is situated a short distance from Hawkshead,
along the eastern shore of Esthwaite Water under the woods and tarns of Claife Heights. Sawrey is
split into two separate hamlets, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey. Near Sawrey is renowned for Hill
Top, the 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter wrote most of her works.
The Tower
Bank Arms, next to Hill Top, is very popular with locals and tourists and the place to go for
some outstanding locally brewed beers and Lakeland cuisine. Far Sawrey is close to the ferry
point on Windermere Lake and its main attraction is St Peter’s Church, which dates back to the
19th century.
The most popular pub in the hamlet is Sawrey Arms and comes highly
recommended. The most popular walks around Sawrey are the walks in Grizedale Forest and Claife
Heights. Coniston Lake and Tarn Hows are relatively close to Sawrey, just a short drive away.
