Pooley Bridge
Description: Pooley Bridge is an old fishing village on
the Eamont River, under Dunmallet Hill at the northern point of Ullswater. The village’s name is
derived from the Norse word for hill with a pool, ‘pooley’, the Bridge part was added at a later
stage. One of the main attractions is the Iron Age Fort, located on top of Dunmallet Hill with
magnificent views of Ullswater and the surrounding landscape.
This small village has two
main streets which are lined with old greystone houses, a few hotels, guest houses, tea rooms,
souvenir shops, a tourist information centre and the Church of St Paul’s dating back to the 19th
century. Fishermen still frequent the area because there is a large amount of Salmon and trout
available.
There are a variety of good walks that start at Pooley Bridge and wind their
way through the beautiful scenery around the village. At the Pooley Bridge Pier the Ullswater
Steamers take visitors on a cruise around the lake, or for a trip to Howtown or Glenridding.
