Lorton
Description: Lorton is situated in the stunning Vale of Lorton
just a few miles south of Cockermouth. The village is divided into two sections, High Lorton and
Low Lorton. High Lorton is the bigger of the two and stands on the edge of Whinlatter Pass and
is famous for Yew Tree Hall, where the Quaker George Fox preached to Cromwell’s army.
High
Lorton is also famous for the Yew Tree, which inspired William Wordsworth’s poem ‘Yew Tree’ and
is at least 1000 years old . High Lorton provides visitors with a Post Office, an arts and crafts
centre, a general store, a cafe and a choice of accommodations.
Low Lorton, by the River
Cocker, is famous for Lorton Hall, with its 15th century Pele tower. The caravan park in Low
Lorton has breathtaking views of the countryside, and the Wheatsheaf Inn is renowned for serving
the finest local cuisine and outstanding local ales and beers.
Half way between both
Lortons is St Cuthberts Church, dating back to 1809, but there has been a church on this site for
the past 800 years. Crummock Water and Lake Buttermere are situated short distance from the
village, and there are a few outstanding walks winding through the beautiful surrounding
landscape.
