Kirkby Stephen
Description: This bustling market town, at the head of
the stunning Eden Valley, is surrounded by the most beautiful Lakeland scenery. Kirkby Stephen
received a market charter in the 14th century and holds a market every Monday.
The market
square is lined by an old collar of cobble-stones and there are a number of buildings of
historical and architectural importance throughout the town. The Parish Church St Stephen, or the
Cathedral of Dales as it is commonly known, is on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church. The church
contains a few fascinating relics, like the Loki Stone, one of only two in Europe.
Kirkby
Stephen offers a number of walking trails winding through the stunning landscape, Alfred
Wainwright’s coast to coast walk passes right through the town, as well as the fells leading to
southern Lakeland.
