Ireleth
Description: Ireleth, overlooking the Duddon estuary is
situated on the southern most tip of the Cumbrian coast. This village’s origins date back to the
11th century, making it one of the oldest settlements.
The Doomesday Book of William the
Conqueror made a reference to Ireleth. The iron mining and iron works industry has helped the
village to grow. One of the largest monasteries in Britain, The Furness Abbey, is found close to
the village and dates back to 1127.
At the Abbey visitors can view the Dalton area from
times gone by or take a look through the visitor centre, which is both entertaining and
informative. Ireleth’s local pubs serve some of the finest locally brewed beers and outstanding
local dishes. The village offers a range of accommodation from hotels to guest houses.
