Lake District - Towns and Villages Buttermere
There's
plenty of towns and villages dotted all over the Lake District,
all are well within driving distance of each other, offering splendid
scenery and views of lakeland fells, mountains, lakes, rivers and
tarns. Many of which have excellent accommodation available wether
you are an avid walker/hiker or just here to see the beautiful scenerey,
for mountain bikers many of them offer safe storage for your bikes.

Buttermere
Description: This quaint village stands on the farming land
between Buttermere Lake and Crummock Water. Buttermere consists of farms, two famous hotels,
stone built houses, a small church and a school house which has been converted into the village
hall. A short distance from the village there is a youth hostel which overlooks Buttermere
Lake.
The Church of St James stands on a rocky outcrop which overlooks the village and was
built in 1840. The church contains a memorial to Alfred Wainwright on one of its windows. The
Bridge Hotel and the Fish Hotel, made famous by J Budsworth story, A Fortnight’ Ramble in the
Lakes, are popular with visitors.
Buttermere village is popular with fell walkers who wish
to explore the surrounding area, both Buttermere Lake and Crummock Water offer excellent walking
trails exploring the Lake District.
