Description: Boot stands at the bottom of Hardknott Pass, the
steepest road in the Lake District, in the Eskdale Valley. This small, picturesque village is
made up of stone cottages, a farm, a couple of inns, a corn mill and a general store.
Boot
is an excellent base for exploring the valley, with a number of accommodations and services on

along with iron ore industry in the area.
Eskdale Mill, dating back to 1578, is Boot’s
main attraction and houses a permanent exhibition of the techniques of milling grain. St
Catherine’s parish church, dating back to the 15th century by the river Esk, is another sight
with visiting in Boot. Hardknott Castle, the ruins of the Roman fort Mediobogdum, is found on the
summit of Hardknott pass a short distance from the village.
