Askham
Description: Askham, 3 miles east of Pooley Bridge in the
Lowther Valley, is the perfect place for visitors looking to take a break from modern life. The
small village has a row of 17th and 18th century houses, two lively pubs, a quiet village green,
a town hall, a church and close by, the ruins of a castle.
A short distance from the
village is Lowther Estate, which contains the ruins of Lowther Castle, the Earl of Lonsdale’s
former family home. Askham Hall was built in the 14th century and in the 16th century was
converted into an Elizabethan mansion. On the road to Lowther Castle you’ll find St Michael’s
Church, with parts of it dating back to the 13th century.
The churchyard contains the
Lowther Mausoleum which was built in 1857. The leisure centre, Lowther Park, is found in the
village and offers a number of activities for people of all ages.
