Lake
District Shopping
Shopping in
the Lake District in Cumbria, which is mostly rural, can be very
exciting. Within many of the villages and small towns you will
find shops tucked away in alleys or yards away from the busy high
street which offer interesting finds and which may offer an idea
for a gift or souvenior. Here too, you may find that Lake District
thimble or teaspoon to add to your collection or even that badge
for your rucksack or walking stick!
Outdoor Clothing/Equipment
The Lake District
in Cumbria is well known for it's outdoor clothing/equipment shops.
Visitors from all around the world come here, not only to visit
our scenic beautiful Lake District, but also to purchase their
outdoor clothing and equipment. Hawkshead and Ambleside are well
known for their outdoor clothing and equipment shops, however,
you will find many of these types of shops in other villages and
towns around Cumbria.
Food/Groceries for
Self Catering
Here in the Lake District
you will find many of the well known supermarket chains as well
as a local supermarket chain. Therefore there is no need to fill
your car, with valuable space needed for your luggage, with food.
You can do your shopping online and have it delivered to your
self catering apartment or cottage at a time that is convenient
for you thereby eliminating that extra load on your vehicle.
Pet
Shops
In most of the bigger
towns you will find Pet Shops. However, in many of the small villages
you will find shops that not only sell human food but also pet
food. With Cumbria, being mostly rural, you are sure to find a
vet should you require one and many vet practices also sell pet
food and accessories. Please remember, when walking the fells,
to keep your dog on a lead as farmers don't take kindly to your
pet chasing their livestock !
Speciality
Foods
Within most of the
supermarkets in Cumbria you will find an area with local speciality
foods like Damson Gin, Kendal Mintcake, Cumberland sausage, Herdwick
meat and probably the worst one for the figure, but oh so nice!,
sticky toffee pudding. And, if you are in Grasmere you just have
to try the local gingerbread - it is well worth the visit.
Chemist/Pharmacy
Most towns within the
Lake District have a Chemist/Pharmacy. This website will allow
you find the one closest to where you are - www.nhs.uk/services/trusts/pharmacies.
However, if you have an emergency it is advisable to either phone
for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E Department.
Off
Licence
The Lakes has a wide
variety of options for buying your alcohol. All supermarkets have
an off licence section and where there is no supermarket you will
find that most shops within the smaller villages sell alcohol.
Cumbria is also known for it's speciality ales which are brewed
by local small breweries and sold within the supermarkets or local
pubs.
Gifts/Souvenirs
Being a major tourist
area, Cumbria has many shops which offer great ideas for gifts/souvenirs.
These can range from chocolate sheep droppings for the children,
local fudge or mintcake for mum and dad to a local thimble and
badge for grandma or grandad. The options are vast and you are
sure to enjoy your shopping experience.
Petrol/Diesel/Fuel
When travelling to
the Lake District it is always important to remember, as some
villages or towns may be far apart from each other, that you keep
an eye on your petrol/diesel situation. It has been reported that
many visitors misjudge the distances and run out of fuel. This
is no way to start your relaxing holiday here in Cumbria!
Garden
Centres
Hayes Garden World,
which is situated within Ambleside, offers everything for your
garden and patio. These range from soil for your planters, flowers,
trees, ornaments for your garden, patio furniture, barbeques to
sheds as well as books to help you plan your garden. There are,
however, other smaller nurseries throughout Cumbria.
