Workington

Description: Workington, which is situated at the mouth of the river Derwent, can be reached from junction 40 on the M6 motorway via the A66 Keswick to Workington road, or alternatively, by bus or train.

It was in this town where the famous Henry Bessemer first introduced his revolutionary steel making process. Unfortunately, the town has had to diversify into other forms of industry due to the decline of the steel industry and coal mining as the steel making finally ended in August 2006.

This seaside town has plenty of parking available. Workington is also home to the ball game known as "Uppies and Downies", which is a traditional version of football with it's origins in Medieval football. Only three handmade balls are made each year and each one is dated.

The Helena Thompson Museum, which was left to the people of Workington in 1940 by Miss Helena Thompson, has pottery, glass, silver and furniture dating back to Georgian, Regency and Victorian times as well as the industrial and social history of coal mining, ship building and iron and steel making in Workington and it's surrounding area. For a great family day out visit the Eclipse Leisure Centre, here you will find 12 ten-pin bowling lanes with children's bumpers on all lanes as well as a 30 gun Quasar laser tag games arena.

Workington, as with the rest of Cumbria, offers a vast selection of accommodation, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, Guest Houses to hotels.
