Windermere
Description: Windermere, or Birthwaite as it was originally called, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway via A591 or alternatively by bus or by train. This village, which is still called a village but has all the amenities of a town, is the gateway to The Lakes in Cumbria.
Being a village parking is sparse, however, the public transport in summer is excellent. Windermere is the most commercialised village in the Lake District, here you will find commercial banks, cuisine restaurants, pubs and many shops which supply climbing and fell equipment as well as suitable hiking and climbing clothing.
In Windermere you will find St Mary's Church, which was built in 1848, Orrest Head, which was Alfred Wainwright's first climb and Baddeley Clock (built as a memorial to M J B Baddeley - an author of a series of well regarded guidebooks), which divides Windermere and Bowness on Windermere.
Windermere has a vast amount of accommodation to choose from, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, Guest Houses, Boutique Hotels to five star hotels. The nearest lake is Lake Windermere, which is approximately 10.5 miles in length and approximately a mile wide. Although called Lake Windermere it's proper name is just Windermere as it is not a lake it's a mere, however, everybody calls it Lake Windermere so people don't get mixed up with Windermere village. The nearest fells are Brant Fell (Post Knott) and Orrest Head.
