Ulverston

Description: Ulverston, which is on the fringe of Morecambe Bay, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway following the A590 and signs to Barrow in Furness, or alternatively, by bus or train.

This historical market town, which was awarded a Market Charter in 1280 by Edward I, still has two street markets which are held every Thursday and Saturday. Ulverston's most visible landmark, Hoad Monument, is a 90ft copy of the Eddystone Lighthouse which sits on Hoad Hill and overlooks the town. This is a monument to Sir John Barrow, born in Ulverston in 1764 and a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society. You will find his story in the town's heritage centre. Although Ulverston has had many famous residents, the most well known would have to be Stan Laurel from Laurel and Hardy, the comic genius who was born in Ulverston in 1890.

Ulverston's canal, which is approximately three quarters of a mile from the town centre, was built during the late 18th century (around 1795) by engineer John Rennie. It is about one mile long and apparently the deepest and widest in England. The construction of this canal was funded by the local businessmen who wanted to transport goods from Morecambe Bay to the town centre, as well as to export goods worldwide this included the locally produced "Ulverston Check" cotton. Sadly this canal was closed around the 1940's with the arrival of the railway.

Ulverston, which calls itself a "Festival Town", hosts many annual festivals - details and dates of which can be found on the Ulverston website.

A wide variety of accommodation can be found in Ulverston, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering cottages to hotels.
