Silloth on Solway

Description: Silloth on Solway, which is a quaint Victorian seaside town in north west Cumbria, can be reached from junction 41 on the M6 motorway via the B5305 to Wigton and then on the B5302 to Silloth, or alternatively by bus. Silloth's railway, which unfortunately was closed as part of the "Beeching Cuts" on 7 September 1964, was originally opened in August 1856 to connect the port with the national rail network. Silloth began to expand as a resort in 1862 and for the local people it provided a much needed connection with the main line serves at Carlisle. It became the main method of transport for farmers' livestock and crops. Therefore, the closure of this line destroyed Silloth's function as a seaside resort. However, the development of two large caravan parks in the 1970's resurrected Silloth as a popular tourist destination attracting large numbers of tourists all year round.

Silloth, which has tree lined cobbled streets and a huge green, provides spectacular scenic views across the Solway Firth from it's impressive promenade. It is from here that you will find the most impressive sunsets.

This spectacular seaside town has much to offer the tourist. The level countryside of the Solway plain bestows a variety of appealing walks and easy cycling. For up-to-date information and dates of upcoming events it is advisable to visit the Silloth Tourist Action Group website.

Silloth offers a wide variety of accommodation, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering, camping and caravan sites to hotels.
