Rydal

Description: Rydal, which is a tiny hamlet between Ambleside and Grasmere, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway via the A591, or alternatively, by bus. The public transport in Cumbria is excellent during the summer months.

This tiny hamlet, which consists of a small cluster of houses, church and hotel, became well known in the history of English Romantic literature as William Wordsworth was the occupier of Rydal Mount from 1813 to 1850. The gardens of Rydal Mount, was designed by Wordsworth himself. Tucked away from the main house, overlooking both the grounds and the two nearby lakes, Wordsworth built his "Writing Hut". It is believed that Wordsworth bought White Moss House, which is at the northern end of Rydal Water, for his son Willie. This remained in the Wordsworth family until the 1930's. William's wife, Mary, continued to rent this property after his death in 1850 until her death in 1859. Mary Henderson (nee Wordsworth), William's great, great granddaughter bought this property in 1969 and opened it to the public the following year to display mementoes of William's life which was devoted to literature.

Rydal Hall, which is located centrally on the "Coffin Route" between Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, is an early 19th century Grade II listed historic house. This house, which is now used for retreats, conferences courses and holidays, has beautiful formal gardens which was designed in 1909 by Thomas Hayton Mawson, the well known garden designer and landscape architect. These scenic gardens, which has a fountain and balustrades, is open to the public for a small donation and houses The Old School Room Tea Shop which is open every day except on Christmas day.

Although a tiny hamlet, it offers an ideal scenic base for your Lake District holiday. Accommodation on offer ranges from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses and hotel.
