Penrith
Description: Penrith, which is Cumbric for "red hill" and which lies on the eastern fringes of the Lake District National Park, can be reached from junction 40 on the M6 motorway, or alternatively, by bus or train.
From Penrith Beacon, which is a hill that overlooks the town, you can appreciate the panoramic view across the plain to the Lakeland Fells. William Wordsworth, the famous poet, wrote of the town's famous Beacon which was once a link in a communication chain that ran the length of the country. This was used as an early warning system when the Scots were on the rampage again. Sadly this prosperous staging town used to attract many attacks from the marauding Scots.
Penrith has many buildings of architectural and historical interest; including St Andrew's Church built from 1720 to 1722 and which contains the reputed grave of Caesarius, the giant 10th century Cumbrian king, the ruins of Penrith Castle which stands in Castle Park and dates from the early 15th century (this can be viewed from the adjacent railway station), the ruins of Brougham Castle as well as the henge sites of Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table. Southwest of the church is a house, which is dated 1663 and which was a school attended by William and Dorothy Wordsworth and William's future wife, Mary Hutchinson. Today, however, Penrith provides a good base for a Lakeland or Eden Valley holiday with most towns within easy driving distance.
Penrith offers a wide variety of accommodation, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering cottages to hotels.
