Millom
Description: Millom, which was originally called Holborn Hill in the Victorian times, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway and by following the A590 towards Barrow in Furness. After approximately five miles after Newby Bridge turn right onto the A5092 towards Millom and Whitehaven and after approximately fifteen miles bear left onto the A5093 towards Millom, or alternatively, by bus or train.
This small town, which is on the Duddon estuary in the south west corner of the Lake District, sits below the mass of Black Combe. From the summit of Black Combe, the Scafell range, the Coniston range and the Yorkshire Dales can clearly be seen. However, on a clear day, this panoramic view extends to the Isle of Man and Snowdonia which is approximately 85 miles to the south.
This small seaside town, which offers free parking, has many attractions and activities to offer. These range from walking, horse riding, bird watching to fishing. Millom's seaside location is a perfect area for water sports, this was made possible by a sea wall that crumbled and left a 200 acre recreational lake for the town. This lake has been approved for competitions. Millom, which is steeped in history, has a Folk Museum at the same station where steam trains and now modern trains still make stops at the same platform. This museum has a full scale reconstruction of a drift from the nearby Hodbarrow iron ore mine, replicas of a miner's cottage kitchen and a blacksmith's forge and information about the local poet, Norman Nicholson.
Millom, as with the rest of Cumbria, offers a vast selection of accommodation and these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses to hotels.
