Maryport
Description: Maryport, which was originally called Ellenfoot, can be reached from junction 40 on the M6 motorway via the A66 Keswick to Workington road, along the A595 and the A594, or alternatively, by bus or train. Maryport's railway station, which is a stop on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line, is approximately 44 kilometres south west of Carlisle. This station, which is unstaffed due to there being no station buildings only simple waiting shelters, is unusual as it has a single bi-directional platform unlike the usual two side platforms used elsewhere on the double track sections of the Cumbrian Coast Line.
Local Landowner Humphrey Senhouse renamed Maryport after his wife Mary, which was later confirmed in an Act of Parliament in 1791. Maryport had the largest docks on the west Cumbrian coast until 1927. This beautiful harbour side town, which is on the scenic Solway Firth, has almost 2000 years of history and is proud to offer it's visitors a Roman fort, Roman museum, Georgian buildings and Victorian docks. Here you will also find a maritime museum, the Lake District Coast Aquarium and marina. Maryport's streets come alive when they host their annual carnival with a procession of floats, street entertainment, music and dance. There is also a wide variety of walks to choose from in and around Maryport.
As with the rest of Cumbria, Maryport offers a wide selection of accommodation which ranges from bed and breakfast establishments, Guest Houses, self catering and hotels.
