Kirkby Lonsdale
Description: Kirkby Lonsdale, which is a small town in Cumbria on the River Lune, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway following the A65 to Kirkby Lonsdale, or alternatively, by bus.
From the churchyard of St Mary's church, which is a Norman structure with fine carved columns, the panoramic view of the scenic River Lune is known as Ruskin's View. John Ruskin, who was an English art critic, social thinker and also remembered as a poet and artist, claimed this view as "One of the loveliest views in England".
Devil's Bridge, which is over the River Lune, becomes a motorbike enthusiast's meeting place every Sunday. This bridge, which dates from around 1370, is made of well masoned fine gritstone and consists of three spans. Legend has it that the Devil appeared to an old woman and promised to build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross over it. However, when the bridge was completed the old woman threw bread over the bridge and her dog chased after it thereby outwitting the Devil. Devil's Bridge is also popular with scuba divers as it has relatively easy access and egress, deep rock pools and good visibility. Kirkby Lonsdale also holds yearly festivals in September.
