Kendal
Description: Kendal, which was previously called Kirbie Kendal, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway via the A591, or alternatively, by bus or train. Public transport in and around Kendal is excellent during the summer months.
This ancient market town, which lies on the river Kent and which has many historical buildings and bridges, has commercial banks, shopping arcades, shops, fine cuisine restaurants and pubs. Kendal's motto is "Wool is my bread", this was due to it being a thriving centre for the wool trade in the fourteenth century. Today, Kendal's prosperity comes from shoemaking, engineering, insurance as well as administrative offices for local government and the Lake District National Park.
Being a town, Kendal has ample parking - some of which is within the shopping arcades. Here too you will find many attractions and activities for the whole family. These range from cinema's, theatres, museums, castles, climbing wall, dry ski slopes and maize maze to name just a few of the possibilities. However, as Kendal is only approximately nine miles from Windermere there is a vast amount of mountains and lakes to choose from to visit.
As with the rest of Cumbria, Kendal offers a wide selection of accommodation establishments. These range from bed and breakfast establishments, Guest Houses to five star hotels.
