Grasmere

Description: Grasmere can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway via the A591, from the vale of Keswick southwards over Dunmail Raise, or alternatively, by bus. The public transport in summer is excellent.

Parking may be limited as this is a small village, however, this little village has much to offer. It was made popular by one of the Lakes Poets, William Wordsworth, who lived here in Dove Cottage. He and his family are also buried here in St Oswalds church, which dates from the 13th century.

Every year St Oswalds holds a Rushbearing Ceremony, which features a procession through the village, with bearings made from rushes and flowers. Included in this procession are six Maids of Honour, church choir, brass band and everybody is welcome to join in and carry their own decorated rushbearing.

In addition to this annual event is the Grasmere Sports day, this has been held every August since 1852. Here you will find Cumberland wrestling, fell running and hound trails. A perfect day for the whole family.

Although a small village Grasmere has a vast amount of accommodation to choose from, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, Guest Houses to hotels. To the south of the village is Grasmere Lake, around which there are some scenic gentle walks. However, as Grasmere is centrally located, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Skiddaw and the Langdale Pikes offer a greater challenge.
