Egremont

Description: Egremont, which lies at the foot of Uldale Valley and Dent Fell, can be reached from junction 40 on the M6 motorway via the A66 westwards towards Cockermouth. At Cockermouth turn left onto the A5086 towards Egremont, or alternatively, by bus. Unfortunately the Whitehaven, Cleater and Egremont Railway was closed in 1947.

Egremont is a traditional market town with a long historical and industrial heritage in Cumbria. This town is similar to Cockermouth in that it has a wide main street which opens out into the market place and which is overlooked at one end by a ruined Norman Castle, to which there is free access.

Egremont's annual Crab Fair, which is held on the third Saturday in September, originated in the mid to late 12th century when Henry II gave the crab apple fair a royal charter. Apparently the bitter taste of the apples made people grimace and hence where The World Gurning Championship originated from. Traditionally the distorted faces of contestants were presented through a horse collar. However, the elderly and toothless have an advantage due to their greater facial flexibility. This quaint market town has many interesting and unique places for it's visitors to enjoy, these include Egremont Castle, Hartley's Ice Cream, Florence Mine, Clints Quarry, Lowes Court Gallery, cycle paths, a wide variety of walks and much, much more.

Here in this small town you will find a wide selection of accommodation to choose from, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering cottages to hotels.
