Cartmel
Description: Cartmel, which is one of the prettiest villages in England and just west of Grange over Sands in Cumbria, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway following the A590 signposted for Barrow in Furness and bearing left on to the B5277, or alternatively, by bus or train.
This picturesque village, which has a beautiful square still has a cross, an old village pump and a river running through it, is home to the Cartmel Priory, which was founded by William Marshal in 1190. William Marshal was Baron of Cartmel and Earl of Pembroke. The main duty of the Prior and the twelve monks, who came from Bradenstoke Priory in Wiltshire where William's father was buried, was to offer prayer for William's family in perpetuity. However in 1536 the priory was disbanded by the Dissolution and four of the monks, together with ten villagers who supported them, were hanged. The villagers petitioned to keep the church as it was their only place of worship, and it was this request that saved the priory.
Between 1624 and 1790 it was used as a prison and later as a Grammar School. The gatehouse became a museum in 1923 and in 1946 it was given to the National Trust who operate it as the Cartmel Priory Gatehouse. This church, which is steeped in history has many features of special interest inside and outside.
To the south of this beautiful village stands Holker Hall, which is the home of the Cavendish family, and is open to visitors. You need to allow plenty of time for your visit here as there is a lot to see. Not only are the rooms unhindered by ropes and barriers, but the 25 acres of formal gardens and woodlands are renowned. The great Holker Lime, which was planted here in the 17th century, is 26ft in circumference.
Cartmel's annual events include Cartmel Steeplechases which is held on the Spring Bank Holiday, the Agricultural Show which is held in early August and the Cartmel Races which is held on the August Bank Holiday.
Despite being a small picturesque village, Cartmel has a vast selection of accommodation on offer, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering to hotels.
