Broughton in Furness

Description: Broughton in Furness, which is a small town on the southern edge of the Lake District National Park, can be reached from junction 36 on the M6 motorway via the A590 following the signs to Barrow in Furness and turning right onto the A5092 to Broughton in Furness, or alternatively, by bus. Unfortunately this railway line, which extended northwards to Coniston, was closed to passengers in 1958 and to goods in 1962. The nearest railway station to Broughton is now Foxfield railway station, which is approximately two miles south west of Broughton.

Broughton, which was once an important market town, still hosts a market on Thursdays. There are ancient slabs of slate upon which fish were once displayed in the square as well as the old stocks. Here too you will find the 19th century obelisk which commemorates George III's Golden Jubilee. Amongst the dramatic backdrop of Raven Crag and Black Combe, which stands at a height of 1896 ft, sits the Swinside stone circle. Although this is on private ground, it can be seen from the Duddon Bridge to Corney Fell road. The Duddon Iron Furnace, which is off the Ulpha road just north of Duddon Bridge on the A595, is cared for by the Lake District National Park. Here you will find the most complete charcoal furnace in England which dates from 1736.

Although Broughton in Furness is a small town it has a vast selection of accommodation to offer, these range from bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering cottages to hotels.
