Appleby
Description: Appleby, which is on the edge of the Lake District National Park, can be reached from junction 40 on the M6 motorway via the A66 eastwards until you see the turn off for Appleby, or alternatively, by bus or train.
Appleby's railway station, formerly known as Appleby West, was opened in May 1876. It was here that the well known railway enthusiast Bishop Eric Treacy suffered a fatal heart attack. A plaque commemorates the spot.
Appleby has many annual events which are held throughout the year, one of which is the world famous Appleby New Fair, which runs for a week in the second week of June and which was set up in 1685 as a fair for horse trading. This attracts a huge gypsy gathering as well as a large amount of visitors/tourists to the town. There is also the Appleby Town Carnival and Sports which is held in mid July, the Jazz Festival which is held in June, the Appleby Agricultural show which is held in early August and the Appleby and District Gardeners' Society Show which is held in early September.
