The pub has been here for something like 400 years at the start of the mountains and the pack horse trails to the West. Forever associated with Donald Campbell and his world water speed record attempts, the pub remains a classic Lakeland Inn of rare quality.
Overlooking the village, a hotel extension was added over 100 years ago when the railway came (in 1859) and left (in 1962). The Sun is still here though and offers a unique mix of four star Inn, conservatory restaurant, great pub and the kind of comfortable informality and atmosphere that many attempt but few achieve.
The room were added when the hotel was built in 1902. Overlooking the garden and well away from the pub, we currently have 8 available, all ensuite and comfortably furnished with decent bath or shower rooms. Definitely not Travelodge in style, ours are designed to offer a good night's sleep and a decent breakfast to set you up for the day.
The bar is the heart of a good pub…and the bar at The Sun is something very special with 8 real ales on handpull, 4 draft lagers, 20+ malts and 30+ wines. It also has a stone bar, floors and walls, exposed beams, a working range in the fireplace that also heats the hot water and a staircase upstairs to a new eating and drinking area open to the roof.
